EDIT : "When i say customer i say talend customer. So talend users:) "
Hi,
I'm looking to upgrade talend 4.2.2 to 5.0.1 but i wanted to know a little bit more about it from the "customer" point of view (not from a talend operator or commercial).
Is it worth it ? Talend 4.2.2 is working fine minus a few bugs and a not really practical TAC (but it's working fine).
Can anyone tells me what changed ? What is good and what is bad ?
Thx a lot
I'm gonna list a few things that are "bad" in 4.2.2 but that don't mean i'm not happy about talend. That's a few things that i want to know if they're gone in the 5.0.1 version.
EDIT :
A few things that are bothering me on TIS 4.2.2
- Sometimes the TalendString class is not found in a job. I have to right click "setup routines dependencies" and re-check all of the classes. And sometimes the routine dependencies menu doesn't show and i must restart talend to make my job work again.
- When exporting a job on Unix/Linux i must export it in Windows&linux format or else it doesn't work on linux. I get a main class issue. But when exporting in Windows+Linux mode it works. But my jobs are quite heavy (because there is two version of them).
- Sometimes i have a "null pointer exception" error that appear on the screen and talend get completly paralyzed. It doesn't happens a lot. But just sometimes (i get it once a month. Sometimes less).
A few things that are bothering me on TAC
- When you create a job, TAC doesn't show the folder you create on TIS. So if you have two jobs in TIS in two seperate folder with the same name, TAC is not really happy about it
- tSplitRow cannot be exported to TAC (it generates an error) but it's working fine on TIS or when i export it and use the sh.
- You can't create CRON with the same name in two different jobs.
I guess that's all.

Hi Rude
In my opinion, from "customer" point of view, the requirements are fixed and do not always change.
Once all these applications and jobs has been developed, tested and deployed. They work fine. There is no need to update it so often.
However, if your customers' requirements are always changing and need more new techniques, update it.

When i say customers i mean Talend Users. English is not my native language.
But what you are saying is : "If your fine with it. Do not update it ?". Did i get that right ?

If you're curious about changes in new versions, say, TAC, you can refer to the History of Changes section in the TAC User Guide;
In every Talend <ProductName> User Guide/Components Reference Guide, you'll find the History of Changes section right below the preface. You can check the changes against the corresponding version and do some comparison between versions.

As per my understanding one must upgrade it to higer version. Reasons are listed below
1) Its provided under GPL so its open source.
2) There is no AMC involved for version upgrade at least for Open Source ones.
3) It's always better to keep your environment updated, because Talend is growing very fast and you might see so many version changes in coming days. So there are chances that you might not get good support later for that version.
4) Version upgradation is very simple with Talend, Just click on Upgrade and proceed with it.
5) There are higher chances that bugs will be fixed and code would also be optimized in higher versions.
6) Community support is just outstanding so its better to do it now, so if something goes wrong you can always get in touch with someone, as they say NO ONE HAS SEEN TOMORROW.
7) With one set of backup, you can always try to upgrade the veriosn and test the job. THE SOONER THE BETTER.
These all are my personal thoughts/understanding, so would suggest you to get some help directly from Talend folks.
So, had I been the customer I'd have surely done that. I don't see any harm in it.

Open your TOS-DI and find tab Upgrade! with upside down hat sign, just above the Job Designer.
Make sure you are connected with the internet. Click on it and follow the instruction provided on the website.
